Vitamin C
Vitamin C (L Ascorbic Acid) is a water soluble vitamin that has many benefits.
• Plays an essential role in the manufacture of collagen.
• Helps repair damaged tissue.
• Is a powerful antioxidant.
• Helps the body absorb more iron.
• Plays a role in the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells.
• Keeps teeth and gums healthy.
• Helps heal wounds and broken bones.
• Boosts immune function
Muscle Damage
Three studies evaluated the effects of vitamin C supplementation on muscle damage following exercise. It appears that higher doses of vitamin C (800 mg/day to three grams/day) may have some benefit in reducing muscle soreness and damage following exercise. However, lower doses (200 milligrams/day) have little benefit.
Common Colds
Some nutritionists have called vitamin C the cure for the common cold. Although it is not a cure, numerous studies have shown that vitamin C is effective in reducing the severity and the duration of the common cold. One study showed Vitamin C reduced the duration of the cold by 21%, and another found vitamin C reduced the severity and length of respiratory infections in a group of marathon runners.
Antioxidant
Free radicals are unstable by-products of the body’s normal chemical processes. Stress and environmental toxins increase free radicals in the body, which can damage cell membranes and interact with genetic material. Free radicals may contribute to the aging process, cancer, heart disease and cataracts. They can also enhance the hazardous properties of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, a major factor in the development of atherosclerosis. Antioxidants like vitamin C can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even prevent their negative impact on the body.
Mental Function
Vitamin C concentration in the brain is 15x higher than anywhere else in the body. Vitamin C is involved in the production of neurotransmitters that are crucial to memory and mental function. In a 1997 study of Japanese –American men living in Hawaii who took supplemental vitamins C and E had an incredible 88% lower risk of vascular dementia (progressive mental decline that occurs as result of poor circulation in the brain) than those who did not take supplements. This study was a part of an ongoing aging study including 3,385 men aged 71-93 years old. Approximately 15% of people over 65 have some degree of dementia.
Cataracts and Macular Degeneration
Vitamin C is highly concentrated in the eye, and protects against free radicals. One cause of cataracts and macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of impaired vision and blindness, is free-radical damage to the lens. Long term supplementation of vitamin C may reduce the risk of cataracts. The relationship between cataracts and the intake of vitamin C was shown in an ongoing nurses health study in which 247 women ages 56-71participated. Patients taking vitamin C for more than 10 years had a 77% lower risk of age-related cataracts compared to women who did not take the supplement.
Protection Against Heart Disease
Deficiencies in vitamin C have been linked to heart disease. Vitamin C’s powerful antioxidant properties may benefit the heart, helping to maintain blood vessel flexibility and reduced blood pressure.
